Joe, my view has evolved on this issue. After a week of learning more details and observing the Credit Suisse situation, I now agree that SVB should not have been bailed out. This is a global financial meltdown in the early stages, and SVB is the first of many to come. Now the government will have to explain why SVB deserved it, and not others, in the near future.
Perhaps depositors can argue that SVB were negligent in encouraging them to have millions of dollars in one account, knowing if they went belly up their money would be uninsured.
For my part, this is a cautionary tale as to why these decisions should never be made in haste without seeing what comes next. When the government makes an "emergency" decision on a Sunday without congressional approval using fear as a manipulator, it is time for caution.
