On August 9, there will be a Republican primary in the Fourth Congressional District (Fairfield County) between Dr. Michael Goldstein and Ms. Jayme Stevenson for the right to run against incumbent Democrat Jim Himes. Republicans should vote for Dr. Goldstein, as he is the strongest candidate.
Dr. Michael Goldstein
I don’t remember how Mike and I first met. Maybe I read one of his articles or he read one of mine and one of us sent the other an e-mail. But as fellow ophthalmologists, we connected immediately.
I asked Mike why a 72-year-old financially-secure ophthalmologist living in Greenwich would want to do this. Why not hit the beach? Go on a cruise? Take a few strokes off your handicap? Mike responded, “Patriotism.” He saw our beautiful country being destroyed by Leftists and he wasn’t going to let it happen without a fight.
Mike is an accomplished guy. He is an eye surgeon who specializes in corneal surgery. The cornea is the clear covering of the eye in front of the iris. He studied corneal surgery under the legendary Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, a leader in perfecting corneal transplants. This is the ophthalmic equivalent to clerking for a Supreme Court justice.
He is a proven leader in the medical community. He is the past President of the New York County Medical Society and currently sits on its board.
But Mike’s accomplishments do not stop there. By studying at night, he also obtained a law degree and became an expert in health-care law and anti-trust legislation. And he has great ideas on how to reduce health care costs in Fairfield County. He understands how endless bureaucracy causes drug prices to skyrocket while manufacturing costs are decreasing. He understands how anti-trust laws rig the playing field so that insurance company executives, hospital administrators and software engineers make huge salaries while hard-working health care professionals labor like dogs to care for patients. He understands why patients are paying huge insurance company premiums with large deductibles to subsidize this racket.
It wasn’t easy for Mike to get on the ballot to primary Ms. Stevenson. Unlike most states, candidates in Connecticut must attend a convention of delegates to be nominated. As Ms. Stevenson has long been a party insider, Mike had little to no chance of corralling these delegates.
But Mike had a plan. He and his supporters would go to the Convention dressed in white doctor coats and pass out literature on his platform in order to sway some delegates his way.
He even created a new disease – Himes’ disease – characterized by mindlessly supporting an incompetent president who in a matter of months caused gas prices to more than double, massive inflation in real estate and food prices, illegal immigrants bringing in fentanyl killing thousands of Americans along with the obsequious pandering of our enemies such that Russia invaded the Ukraine butchering tens of thousands. And his treatment for Himes’ Disease is to remove this Biden rubber stamp from office.
As Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” And Mike got punched in the face. He didn’t come close to winning the Convention and only received 10% of the delegate vote.
But unlike Mike Tyson’s opponents, Mike got up. He, his wife and his son started to gather the signatures to petition their way on the ballot. They stood at garbage dumps, Home Depots (where the management called the police on them) and Stop and Shops. They knocked on doors. And their enthusiasm attracted a cadre of volunteers who did the same.
And Mike not only got the required number of signatures to force the primary, but in the process he met thousands of Independents and Democrats who liked him and said they would vote for him.
Ms. Stevenson and Mike do not have great ideological differences. Mike is more conservative. He is pro Second Amendment whereas Ms. Stevenson is somewhat tepid on the subject. He also supports parental choice in education and opposes the indoctrination of transgender ideology on young grade school students. Ms. Stevenson, thus far, has been quiet on this subject. Furthermore, Ms. Stevenson did not oppose CRT (Critical Race Theory) being added to the school curriculum of Darien when she was this town’s First Selectman. Mike opposes CRT.
But Mike is not some wild-eyed right winger. He cherishes his gay son.
But the real question for Republican voters is: Who do you want in the ring with Jim Himes, the coiffed and polished Jayme Stevenson; or the scrappy Mike? It’s a no-brainer. Mike Goldstein is the way to go.
