HMO’s and ‘managed’ healthcare are the worst things that have ever happened to our medical system. I’d be willing to bet that our population was healthier and happier when they and their doctor were responsible for their own health. Decisions to die and give birth must be between the individual, their doc and their god. I wish society understood the dying process better, so they could know that it is not as horrid as they imagine it to be. Life is a beautiful gift, every last ounce of it, painful or not. Working as a CNA and being a human now 65 years old I’ve seen plenty of it. The state and ‘managers’ should never be involved in life and death decision making because these eventually become diktats and, as you so eloquently point out, Dr., their self interest is in death, not life. Doctors and patients know how to best treat end of life situations without HMO and state influences. No person should be asked or forced to end another’s life.

Wow--You were on fire and I love what you said. You said what's been on my mind for quite a while now: that doctors no longer are in charge of health care (treatment options/mandates) and the insurance companies/big pharma/govt are the culprits. And Asst. Suicide does make the medical profession the evil doers.

Govt. has intruded itself into everything. Patient privacy was a whole lot better before Hippa came along. Did it prevent others from asking your vaccine status? No. Now it means parents can't be informed of treatment or illness of their children over 18 (but they'll be billed nonetheless). It also means govt. can reach into the records if it can show there is a reason needed for "research". Actually, with the codes it can see at a glance what is going on I suppose.

When I was an intern at The Capitol I was the individual that did the research that was used to stop the assisted suicide bill for almost a decade.
