Very insightful article, but another view of the forest would include jumpstarting other methods of weight control. It’s very difficult for the overweight to exercise. But when someone goes from 300 to 220 lbs, exercise is much easier especially as we get older with bad backs, knees, and ankles. I agree eventually you have to do something to help yourself, but getting a jumpstart can often help.

Dr. Bentivegna,

Is it really your view that the obese should give up because starvation and drugs are the only option? What about exercise designed to build muscle mass to increase the body's metabolism? To skip the entire topic of exercise in this equation seems very myopic to me.

Sincerely,

Andrew Turchin, DMD
